Location: 

In the Western Ghats i.e. Sahyadri Mountains in Junnar Taluka of Pune district of Maharashtra state, you can see Nimgiri Fort and Hanumant Gad at Khandachiywadi. 

• Height: 

The average height of these forts from sea level is about 1108 meters. And the height of the base of this fort is about 300 meters high.

• From Mumbai, you can go to Kalyan from Pargaon Phata and then to Khandachiywadi. From there you can go to the fort. 

• From Pune, after reaching Junnar, you can go to Khandachiywadi by bus. However, it is better to travel by private vehicle. After reaching Pargaon Phata, you can go to Khandachiywadi from there and then to the fort.

Nimgiri Fort and Hanumantgad Places to visit here: 


• When you reach Pargaon Phata in your private vehicle, inquire there and come to the road leading to Nimgiri Fort. From there, you will see a directional board. On it, after coming in front of the directional board leading to Vasewadi, Taleran and Nimgiri villages, you will find an arch. After going a little further from that arch, turn left. After going forward on that road, you will find a small river. After crossing the river bridge, you will find the village of Khandachiwadi. You can park your car in the premises of the Marathi school in the village and go to the fort. 

• Kalubai Temple:

When you park your vehicle near the school in Khandachiwadi village and start going towards the fort, you will find the temple of the village deity Kalubai. When you go to the temple, you can see that its pillars are made of the pillars of an ancient temple. This shows that there was a very carved temple at this place earlier. It is felt. This temple has been recently renovated. The outer pavilion and the inner courtyard are visible. In the inner courtyard, an idol of Kaleshwari Devi can be seen. She is the family deity of many people, as well as the village deity.

After seeing the village deity and moving towards the fort along the forest path, a few steps later, while passing through a dense forest, you will come across a path on your right. As you move forward along that path, you will see 40 Veergals in a straight line. These Veergals are historical. In ancient times, during wars and foreign invasions, as well as in times of crisis, those who fell while protecting their kingdom fell into a deep ravine. It is a custom in Hindu culture to build Veergals (Hiro Stone) in memory of those heroes. Seeing such Veergals reminds us of those heroes. 

• Hanuman Temple:

In this area, you can see a temple with the ruins of Hanuman. You can see the idol of Hanuman. Also, in the area near Veergali in this area, you can also see Shivpind and Ganesh idols. 

• Towards the pass:

After seeing Veergal, you will come back to the previous path and go towards the fort pass, you will see an information board on the way. From there, we will start moving towards the fort along the forest path. This path takes us to the foot of the fort.

Excavated Path: 

After reaching the khindi, you will find a excavated path. This is the path through which you can go to the fort. Iron rods have been placed on this path to climb. Through this path, you can go to the loft-like part of the fort through a good path.

While climbing up this path, you can see a place with a broken door on the way. This can be guessed by looking at the place where the wooden barrier was placed there. There is no door here now. 

• Gates for guards:

You can see gates dug for the shelter of the guards who are stationed on the fort. After observing this gate, you realize that there is a broken path here on the upper side. Which must have been made earlier to come down from above in this gate. Also, water started leaking from the side of this dug gate. So it can be seen that a plan was made to drain that water by making a notch. 

• Path: 

After seeing the deity, we reach the top of the fort via a dug path.

Water Tank:

From the top of the fort, while touring the fort, you can see huge water tanks dug in different places. In which you can see abundant water. They must have been dug to provide drinking water and water for the Gadkari and other officials residing in the fort, as well as the people in the Shibandi. The stones from these must have been taken out and used to build the ramparts and other things on the fort. You can see eight to nine water tanks dug in such places.

• Remains of constructions:

On the fort, you can see the quarters of some built structures. From this, you can get an idea of the residential structure. 

• Three caves and extensive caves:

• On the Nimgiri fort, you can see three adjacent caves. In which you can see that rooms have been made. One of these caves is covered. While inside one of the caves, you can see that there is another adjacent underground room. It is said by the locals that these are Satavahana period caves.

• Ruined Temple:

While wandering around Nimgiri Fort, you can see the ruins of a ruined temple. The stone frame and some wall remains remain. Inside, you can see the idols of Shivpindi and other Hindu deities. Some of them are seen to be ruined. This is a Shiva temple. This is evident. The stone craftsmanship on the temple gives information about the people's life and culture of that time. 

• Nimgiri Fort is also known as Ajinkyagad. 

• From this fort, you can see Pimpalgaon Dam, Hadsar Fort, Chavand Fort, Sindhola Fort, Bhojgiri, Taramati Peak, Daundya Mountain (where a plane from Sydney crashed a few years ago) and the mountainous region of the Sahyadri Mountains in the area.

Hanumant Gad: 

After visiting the Nimgiri Fort, after coming down a little on the steps, you will come across a loft-like area. From there, you will see a path to reach Hanumant Gad. This path is a bit difficult. But after coming down from here and climbing a little, you will see the steps of Hanumant Gad. You can reach Hanumant Gad through this carved step. 


• Water Tank:

You can see a huge water tank attached to the fort. Which is bigger than the Nimgiri Fort. From it, you can get information about the water storage system of that time. Three or four tanks of this nature have been dug on this fort.

• Castle: 

At one place on the fort, you can see the remains of a castle. This castle was huge. It had four towers. Now, the remains of the wall and the tower can be seen. The roof above has been destroyed over time.

• Fort Nimgiri and Fort Hanumant Gad are a pair of forts connected by a pass. This fort is one of the forts built to guard the ancient Bhokardan – Junnar – Naneghat – to Kalyan – Sopara trade route. Many forts can be seen built on this route from Narayan Gaon to Junnar as well as in the Konkan region to guard it. These forts were built since the time of the ancient Satavahanas.


Historical information about Nimgiri and Hanumantgad Fort: 


• Nimgiri and Hanumantgad Forts were built during the Satvahana period. This area was ruled by the Shakas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Shilaharas, and Yadav dynasties. 

• Later, this fort was under the Sultan Shahi, Bahamani rule, Nizamshahi of Ahmednagar, Mughal emperors, and then under the Hindavi Swarajya. Later, this fort was under the British rule. 

• Now, since 1947, this fort is under the control of the Government of Independent India.
