‘If Raigad is the royal residence, then Lingana is its prison’

A tall cone can be seen in the Sahyadri mountain range near Raigad Fort in the Sahyadri Mountains of Maharashtra. This very tall mountain in the shape of a Shivling is like a Shivling made by nature itself. On which Varuna actually performs the Jalabhishek of the king during the rainy season.

• Location:

Lingana Fort is located 16 kilometers northeast of Mahad city in Raigad district of Maharashtra, between Torna Fort and Raigad Fort.

• Boratyachi Naal:

• From Pune city, via Pudhe – Nasrapur – Velhe – Medhe Ghat – Singapore – Mohri – covering a distance of 70 kilometers, then going through Boratyachi Naal and then on to Railing Dongar – Lingana, this is the route to Lingana from Pune.

Lingana Travel and Places to Visit

• Boratichi Nal:

From Pune, we reach Mohri in Konkan via Medhe Ghat. From there, we reach Borati Nal by climbing a steep path. This place is a slippery narrow path in the high mountains. On this path, after half a tunnel, we go ahead along the Railing mountain ridge, and if we go a little further, we get a view of the beautiful mountain ranges of Sahyadri and the dense forest in it. From here, if you give one sound, the Sahyadri responds to your sound by giving many sounds. While going along this path, you get an idea of how the Marathi Mavals became so fierce and how their feet became afraid.

• Railing Plateau:

After climbing further, we see many Sahyagiri cones and come to the Railing Plateau. A wide plateau and a huge mountain in the shape of a Shivling can be seen in front of it, that is Lingana Fort. If you visit this place during the month of Shravan and from June to September, you will forget all your sorrows and be delighted by this beautiful form of nature.

• The first stage of seeing Lingana

• Sahyadri Darshan

From the Railing plateau, we descend and go towards Lingana through a fork in the Borati stream. And the stream remains behind and goes to the lower part. While climbing this path and going up the narrow path, we get to experience a unique pleasure by seeing the forests, grass and blooming flowers that grow during the rainy days.

• Before climbing Lingana from the Railing plateau, we should have the darshan of Janani and Somjai Devi. Trekkers do Lingana Sir only after taking their blessings.

• Also, while climbing Lingana Sir, you must have trekking experience, otherwise an accident can happen.

• Resting cave and water tank:

After climbing the high Katyal ridge, using ropes and other trekking equipment, we pass a stage and we come to a cave on the right side for rest. It is dug and made in the ridge. And on the left of this path, there is a small water tank. Which is very deep. And the water stored in it is drinkable by nature.

• Prison:

While climbing the mountain, at one point, after trekking a little, you see a narrow area widening a little further. If you go further along that path to the Konkan site, you see a cave-like room dug in the slope of a high Lingana. That room has four windows and a door and can easily accommodate fifty people. A rope is tied here. From that, it is not possible to identify whether this is a prison or a prison.

• Grain Room:

A little further from the prison room, you can see another room. There is a barn inside it. Grain must have been stored here. Some trekkers have understood that it came from hiding.

• Building Ruins:

After going beyond this place, you can see the flat part of the loft. You can also see the remains of the rooms built there. From that, you can realize that this is a fort. It is also felt that the Mavlas live here.

• Fortifications:

At this place, you do not get to see the fortifications, only its remains can be seen now. This is realized from the structure of the fallen stones.

• Water Tank:

If you go a little to the side of this place, you can see a water tank made of stone. In which there is water during the monsoon.

• Steps:

While climbing the fort, you can see steps here and there. Which are useful for climbing the Katyalkada.

• Lingana Sulka (Balekilla):

When we come back and start climbing towards the last peak, we come across a high, steep ridge like Dronagiri. We can climb up to the last peak. We have to climb carefully while going there. The soil is slippery. And since the steep path is narrow, if we lose our balance even a little, we can fall directly into a deep valley.

After climbing up this path, we come to Balekilla. Where we can see the saffron flag of Swarajya flying. Where only the wind can dare to climb and the water can dare to descend, the Marathi Mavalas did the work of hoisting the Swarajya flag at that place.

And even today, many climbers go to this place and salute that flag.

Mawale means those who love Swarajya and this soil, born in Marathi soil, follow the Shashivacharitra and travel inspired by the thoughts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

• Return journey:

Just as the Linga peak is tiring while climbing, the moon and sun pulses in our body become active and use our intellect and body power to climb, while descending, it teaches us patience and patience along with intellect and body power. While teaching us to climb and descend slowly, it teaches us to face the ups and downs of life with patience.

Importance and history of Lingana Fort:

• When the Jawali of the Moryas was conquered, the fort of Rairi and the surrounding area came under Swarajya.

• Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj inspected this region and selected the high hill fort of Rairi as Raigad for his capital.

• At that time, Lingana Fort and its surrounding area were inspected. And the hill in the shape of a Shivling was chosen for another Giridurga.

• Since the shape of this hill is like a Shivling pindi, i.e. a linga, it was named Lingana.

• Seeing the denseness of this fort, it was decided to choose this fort as a prison.

• A traitor, a traitor, an enemy spy, a notorious criminal as well as enemies of Swarajya were kept as prisoners here.

• When a notorious prisoner was brought here, seeing the difficult structure and the scary climb and denseness of this place, his courage would also be lost. And he would surrender. If you look at the prison here, it is a room dug in a ditch. This place where fifty people can easily fit is very difficult. It was very difficult to go to this place during rainy days, and it was very difficult to stay.

• When the Treaty of Purandar was signed in the year 1665 AD, Lingana was one of the twelve forts left in Swarajya.

Until 1786 AD, all the maintenance of Lingana Fort was done from Raigad Jamakhar. Also, Somjai and Janani, Navratri and other festival expenses were also done from Raigad Jamakhar.

• After this, however, this fort was neglected.

• The ramparts and other structures on it were also destroyed over time. Only the Katyal caves remained intact.

• In modern times, Lingana Fort attracts climbers. It is only to know its density. And many climbers are attracted by hearing it and set records.

• Sagar Vijay Nalawde from Kolhapur, this climber has climbed Lingana Sulka in 16 minutes.

• Tanaji Kenkare from Maharashtra Rangers has climbed this Belag Sulka in 11 minutes and 22 seconds.

• Accommodation:

Since this is a dense and difficult fort, the rooms dug in Katyal are only for living here. It can accommodate 50 to 100 people. Also, they can meet their water needs from the water tank dug in the nearby Katyal. They will have to arrange food themselves.
